NATICK -- Natick's youth and school sports programs are running up against the limits of the town's playing fields, according to a report the Natick Turf Field Study Group delivered to the Finance Committee on Sept. 17.
TOWN Select Board member Bruce Evans, who served on the four-member study group alongside School Committee representative Matt Brand and Board of Health representative Carla Sangre, told the Finance Committee that existing fields are under "significant capacity pressure" from rising participation, including a field hockey program that now runs from grade one through grade eight. Evans said Natick Soccer Club already has to rent field space from Elm Bank because the town does not have enough fields of its own. The study group, drawing on research from Lexington, Arlington, and Brookline among other communities, stopped short of recommending synthetic turf across the board, saying natural grass remains "the gold standard" but that turf can make sense for high-wear sports such as football, lacrosse, and field hockey. The question before the Finance Committee was whether to recommend that fall Town Meeting hear the report, not to debate its findings, according to the committee chair.
YOUTH LEAGUES Natick Youth Basketball's registration deadline for fall travel basketball, grades 4-8, closes Sept. 21. Travel tryouts are set for Sept. 25-27 and Oct. 2-4, and the organization said players should plan to attend both tryout weekends for their grade. NYB's pre-season skills clinics for grades 4-8 continue at Kennedy Middle School through Sept. 30.
COMMUNITY The Select Board announced that Natick has won the Worcester Red Sox "Town Takeover" trophy, awarded to the community that buys the most tickets to a designated WooSox game, for the fourth year running, a streak covering the entire life of the program.
