Natick's turf study group reviews field overuse and synthetic vs. natural options. The town's athletic fields are used 1,200 to 1,500 hours per year, nearly double the industry recommendation for natural grass, according to Art Goodhind, Supervisor of Land Facilities and Natural Resources. A new natural grass football field would require one additional full-time employee, while synthetic turf would require higher operational costs but no new staff.
Paul Summers, Co-Director of Natick Youth Lacrosse, told the group that weather-related cancellations on grass fields limit practice time and requested a synthetic junior varsity field as the program's top priority.
