NATICK — The Select Board voted unanimously to reject the FLOCK license plate reader pilot program. This decision followed overwhelming public opposition from residents concerned about surveillance and data security risks, with 65 emails submitted to the Board and five residents speaking during public comment. Police Chief Hicks defended the program, noting the department's mobile license plate readers had accessed nearly 3,000 FLOCK records over three years for investigations, including examples like resolving a child abduction case and locating a missing elderly resident.
The Board established a working group including police leadership, administration, legal counsel, IT, and procurement to develop policies for any potential future license plate reader systems.
